Simulated learning

Our classes feature simulations of real-world situations to help students learn and apply new words in their everyday lives, such as personal encounters at the school canteen, bookshop and the public library. 

PSLE English (0001) Syllabus

For PSLE English, students are to attempt and complete four papers: Paper 1, 2, 3 and 4.

Paper 1 – Writing

For Paper 1, students are to complete two components within 1 hour and 10 minutes: Situational Writing and Continuous Writing. Paper 1 carry 27.5% of the overall grade.

For Situational Writing, students are required to attempt a short writing based on the given situation, such as a report or email. The writing must be suited for the given purpose and audience stated in the question.

For Continuous Writing, students are to write a composition with at least 150 words based on a given topic. There will be three pictures that provide different perspectives for interpretation.

Paper 2 – Language Use & Comprehension

For Paper 2, there are two booklets that have to be completed within 1 hour 50 minutes. Paper 2 carry 47.5% of the overall grade.

For Booklet A, students are to complete 28 multiple choice questions (MCQs) that contain grammar, vocabulary cloze and visual text comprehension.

For Booklet B, students are to complete open-ended questions that comprise of grammar cloze, editing for spelling and grammar, comprehension cloze, synthesis/transformation and comprehension open-ended.

Paper 3 – Listening Comprehension

For Paper 3, students are to complete 20 MCQs within 35 minutes. The test seeks to assess the students’ ability to comprehend spoken English. Every text will be read twice. Students will be given time to read the questions. The texts can be in the form of stories, explanations, instructions and advertisements.

Paper 4 – Oral Communication

For Paper 4, the student will have 10 minutes to prepare and another 10 minutes to speak to the examiners. The Oral Communication paper requires students to read a short text aloud in front of the examiner. Then, the student will discuss with the examiners about a given topic in the visual stimulus. Paper 4 occupies 30 marks and 20% of the overall grade.

Reading storybooks can be a fun way to expose yourself to correct use of grammar and new vocabulary, while giving you creative ideas for writing. To get started, you can ask your teacher or the librarian (school or public libraries) on any recommendations. You can also try exploring a genre of your interest, such as Fantasy, Science Fiction, or even Thriller. Focus on the reading experience and be immersed in the detailed illustrations and depictions as described by the author. Over time, you will develop better reading and thinking skills, which are important in helping you to understand exam components, like Comprehension Open-Ended and Visual Text Comprehension.

The best way to learn English is to use it as often as you can in daily settings. You should build up the habit of speaking and writing English the right way. One useful way is to communicate with your teacher, parent, or friend in English while reminding them that you are trying to correct any errors. Making mistakes is part of the learning process, so be patient with yourself. Over time, you will become more aware of the right ways to use the language, which in turn improves your Oral Communication, which is a key component in the PSLE English examination.

Practice Writing

Get into the habit of writing in complete sentences while learning English. You can start with simple sentences to make sure that you can convey the ideas clearly. If you need help with your writing, you can refer to the Comprehension text from your past school test questions. Also, do not hesitate to ask your teacher for help to review your writing. When writing, it is important to take note of the grammar and vocabulary. You can also try keeping a personal diary to reflect on your thoughts and feelings each day. Personal reflections are helpful in organising your thoughts as you express them in words.
